Safari - February 2009

Objective: Holiday of a lifetime
Well our objective was well and truly achieved. The safari was planned and booked in the UK by Andrew Beckett's "Journey into Africa" and he was most thorough and accomodating throughout the planning stages, visiting us with DVD and details of a wide range of options and helping us to put together a varied and interesting set of options.
Our driver guide on safari was Mzee Justice, a huge success, and his skill, knowledge and expertise, complete with a mischievous sense of humour, was a very important contributor to the overall success of the safari.
Every day was a new experience, every day had wonderful high points.
The Lodge accomodation at Arusha, Tarangire and Ngorongoro was comfortable and the food and service levels good. The Wilderness Camp at the private concession on the Ngorongoro/Serengeti border however was simply exceptional and the food provided here, and at the tented camp on the Serengeti Reserve, was simply astonishing, especially when considering that it was all produced on open fires and with primitive 'dutch oven'.
The local staff at these camps were friendly and fun to be with and our small party of four had exclusive occupation of the camp, felt entirely at home and were made to feel like important and valued guests for whom nothing was too much trouble.
It was almost too good to be true. 10 cheetah's in one morning on the Serengeti, including a mother with 3 cubs, two adults with their fresh kills and a three young males trying without much success to hunt and looking rather hungry! Even the trip to the local airfield for the flight back from Serengeti to Arusha was memorable with Mzee spotting two different leopards in trees (surely that bit of old rope hanging from that branch there isn't a leopard's tail, Mzee....oh yes it is isn't it:-)
In addition as had close range encounters with a pride of young lions and two magnificent adult males.
Would I recommend this - You bet I would!
Would we go again - well, when I've saved a few more pennies!
