The African Walking Company was established in January 1999. Its aim is to provide good quality mountain climbs. It has established a reputation for excellence and efficiency.
I did the Rongai climb in late January 2010 and had the time of my life. It was my second attempt at the summit, having failed in 2005 on the Western Breach. I went with another company then. AWC was suerior in every way. The head guide Abraham was simply the best. Assistant Guide Stratton got me to the summit. The rest of the crew were amazing as well. It was uncanny how they knew how I was feeling without me saying a word. All I had to do was put one foot in front of the other. Well done guys - Asante Sana !!!!!
Just to say thanks to all the staff for making it a wonderful trip and all those who helped me to the summit of Kili (Meke,Big George,George,Ellie and especially Florence). To a special group of people I thank you all and wish you well in whatever you decide to do in future.
Stay safe;
Barry and the lads from Newcastle.
We just got back from climbing Kili and then going on a 3-day safari. The people were friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled, but the company has some issues. The tents are old, leaky, and substandard. There was standing water in the well of our tent and those of the other people in our group. They ran out of water summit day. We were double charged for multiple items and are having to seek reimbursement from our vendor now. They lost one of our sleeping bags and compression sacks and made no orderly search for it from what we could tell (3 different people we talked to over a span of 4 days had no idea we'd lost it, who'd been looking, where it was, etc.) and then made no offer to cover it. We had to pay $150 to get back to our lodge after climbing the mountain and 9 other people in our group had to pay $105 as well. The company gets kickbacks from souvenir vendors and has no problem with you as the client getting taken advantage of. For the price, it isn't worth it. Pay more and go with one of the American or European companies like Alaska Mountain Guides or pay way less and go with a local company (like Zara) and expect similar treatment but at least you're paying less for it. On the plus side, the food was pretty good and the guides in their element (on the mountain or on safari) were really good.
Well, I think the easiest thing to say to anyone thinking of climbing Kili is to go and do it, and also not to have any hesitations about using AWC. A friend and I joined up another group of 4 people to make 6 and absolutely enjoyed every minute of it.
Yes its tough, yes its mentallky tiring, but hey, it was worth all the effort.
The AWC guides and porters were top class, and our Chef God-Listen cooked up a meal that most London restaurants would be proud of.
Get those boots on soon.

A great team of guides, cook, porters and assistant porters took care of everything needing care of in order for our team to enjoy the trip and meet the summit challenge.
Meke, our lead guide and Elly, one of the assistant guides were of great help personally in both reaching the summit and coming back down safely.
I got 100% satisfaction out of this holiday and all it entailed. AWC for me lived up to the hype and exceeded my expectations on every front.
I don't know who wrote above that service levels are medium. Having summitted 5 days ago, I have to state that their service levels are exceptionally high and all members of the team thoughroughly agree on this.
While some commentators on other sites grumble about the tipping ceremony, for our team of climbers it was an honor and a pleasure to share what I could with the local team which helped me summit in style, comfort and safety!
