We decided to go in a safari for our honeymoon. We book a 14 days trip with Jackpot. A friend of mine knew Andrew (the owner) and recommended to us. She said it was a person you could trust. I only have to thank my friend for her advise.
After my friend gave me the name of Jackpot I found in the net a mail and contact Andrew, the owner. I've probably sent him more than 20 mails with questions, doubts, changes, etc. He never took more than 1 day to answer back, that was important to me as I'm pretty formal with bussiness.
The price was 2.950usd per person. The first budget that Andrew offer me was 1.850usd per person but I didn't like the lodges and camps, I'm getting old for some things! So I told him to push up the lodges and the price to find a better agreement. When we had everything sort out he aske me for 30% deposit by transfer and the rest upon arrival. It sounded ok to me so I proceed. He sent me a mail confirming the deposit and everything went smoothly.
We went to Arusha from London to Amsterdam and then Kilimanjaro. The return was to Amsterdam and to Barcelona from there. We booked it through the net with KLM (great service in the planes, very happy with them). The price was 900euros per person in total with taxes included.
The drives were great, always looking for something, very informative and knowledge guide, and very kind by the way. The vehicle was a Land Rover just for the 2 of us (private safari) and it was ok. When we had a look at the other companies vehicles they were all about the same. I can tell you in 10 days we drove 1,200 miles with no problems in the car.
We went in a 10 day game drive safari and 4 days gateaway to Zanzibar.
Our gamedrive started in Arusha at the Karama Lodge, new place that I recommend for a first night. We followed to Lake Manyara for a half day tour and I have to say it is a great choice for a first impression, nice and wild park with most of the animals you are about to discover in the following days. We slept at Olmesera Tented Camp. It was ok, food quite good and nice views. The owner, Barbara, is a nice lady from easter Europe who has lived in Tanzania for almost 40 years.
From there we went to Lake Natron. It was a very rough road and we saw almost nobody in a 10 hours drive. We saw the Old Endaya Mountain, impressive volcano. Once in Natron we went to a waterfall, beautiful but you need trecking sandals to get there. I did swim under the fall and had fun. We slept at Lake Natron Tented Camp, very nice, we loved it.
From there we kept going to Lobo Wildlife lodge in Serengeti. We were pretty dissapointed with the lodge, noisy, windy, not good service and bad food. On the other hand we had a wonderful game drive and got to see a family of lions trying to hunt a buffalo. No luck for them after 1 and a half hour trying.
From there to Lake Victoria. The way was through the Western Corridor, absolutely delightful. The best choice we could have done for a tour. Almost nobody on the road and we saw plenty of animals living in ther habitat. Just great!
We went to sleep for 2 nights at Speakbay lodge in Lake Victoria. The best hotel in the gamedrive safari. We actually stayed for 2 nights and it was a right decission to make. Rooms, food, view, management, service, just great.
From there to central serengeti and Ngorongoro. We stayed at Seronera and Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, both of them pretty good. We didn't like much the amount of cars in central serengeti, looks like a zoo. Good that we did all the rest before.
Ngorongoro is a must, just amazing.
By the way, don't waste your time visiting a Masai Village, it's a trap to sell you their handcraft staff and ask you for money every minute. Wacht it at National Geographic, much better.
Last night was at Marera lodge on the way to Arusha. It was very good, nice farewell.
From there to Zanzibar. We stayed 3 days at Ras Nungwi hotel. Perfect getaway to relax in a ¨5* hotel. Excellent service, food and accomodattion. Last night at Tembo hotel in Stone Town. Old hotel but well located. You can see Stone Town in half day and another half for the shopping. That is more than enough.
Finally I would like to make an special remark for our guide/driver in the game drive safari. His name is Vincent and he is an excellent guide, care for you 100% all the time, knows everything about animals and their behavior and always keeps you safe. Ask for him when you book your safari, he is a guarantee of a good time!
