We were extremely pleased with our trip arranged by the team at Adventures Within Reach to Tanzania in May/June 2008. I went on safari and hiked Kilimanjaro with my husband, father & father-in-law. When my husband & I convinced the dads to go, we knew we needed to make the trip as flawless as possible - AWR made the planning easy & took all of our worries away. AWR offered great tips for cost savings - when to go & where to go - how to get the best experience in our price bracket. Our guides in Tanzania were knowledgeable and extremely helpful. They were the right people to go through.
We went on a safari - Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater. We were able to make the trip at the end of the dry season - thanks to the careful coordination at AWR - and so there were fewer crowds, cheaper prices & fewer rainstorms. The lodges were exceptional - the views & rooms were fantastic. A few of the lodges were under construction (most construction happens during the off-season)- and (thanks to AWR's in-depth knowledge) we were able to stay in the already renovated areas so that was very nice. The safari guide led us to adventure, animals, a little bit of hiking and lots of fun (all the things we requested). The meals at the lodges were ok - not fabulous - but not terrible either. I'm a vegetarian and there was plenty to eat.
We also hiked up the Rongai Route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The group of people that led us up the mountain were great. (different guides from the safari) They were very aware of the dangers of the mountain and led our group to the summit safely - the ultimate goal. If something had gone wrong, we would have been in competent hands. We opted for tent camping (which we do on a regular basis state-side) and it was exceptional. The meals were great too - we eat mostly freeze dried while camping in the US - so having "real" food hauled in and cooked by someone else was a luxury. The transportation worked magic - on the way to the trailhead there was a major wreak which closed the one major paved road - the guides were able to find a goat trail (literally) which went around the accident and put us back on the road. This could have set us back a day or more had the drivers not been so resourceful.
Overall I believe that many guide companies can arrange itineraries but perhaps not all of them can arrange the details as proficiently as AWR. We're planning on doing future trips through this company. Maybe even next time we'll take the moms! AWR filters for the best options according to their clients needs & wishes. All the discussions with AWR led to them creating a perfect itinerary that really felt like a vacation. I only wish it could have lasted forever!
