A great photo safari with De-Ta-Sa

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Just like Bev McKay above, I used Alex's services for our private photo safari with Detasa. Innocent Lyimo is based in the USA (the owner), he took care of all the planning and working over my itinerary. I am a serious photographer and wanted only the best vehicle/guide for my work. DeTaSa's stretch Land Rover are the best in business in Tanzania, huge windows, lots of moving space, inverters(3), fridge, unlimited water, beanbags.
I saw and photographed the big 5 along with cubs. Thanks to Alex's superb communication with his peers, we never had a bad day. PHotography wise, the trip was a smashing success.

Very honest people, if you want to know more about my experience with them, do not hesitate to email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

I live and work in the United States, do not go for group photo tours, they are rip-offs, help their local economy by contactingcompanies like Destination Ta

A great safari holiday

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Just a note to say that we had a absolutely super safari in Tarangire, Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorogoro parks/reserves this June/july 2009 with Destination Tanzania. We opted for a mix of tented lodges and camping. (3 nights Tarangire, 1 night Manyara, 4 nights Serengeti, 2 nights Ngorogoro, 1 night at Plantation lodge.)

It started with a meeting with the guide and the co. rep. the night before the start, at the hotel in Arusha, just to review our plans. The guide, Alex, is middle-aged and very experienced at his profession, but also still really enthusiastic about his job. His age (age still gets respect in Africa) allows him some leeway when dealing with the bureaucracy of getting in and out of the parks, highway patrols, etc. The officials know him from his long experience. Although he wears glasses, they really must be binoculars, as he was able to see up-turned sleeping lions and other animals and birds from 100s and 100s of meters away. He is really knowledgeable about the birds and carried a box of field guides to check on any that he was unsure of: birds, raptors, plants, mammals, park guides in his truck, along with bean bags for camera support and binoculars that he was more than willing to share with us. From years of being with avid photographers he was skilled at placing the vehicle at the correct angle to the light for photos, and was keen that we should get photos of animals reflected in water while drinking, evening silhouettes etc. He shut the vehicle off repeatedly in order to quietly roll into the perfect position for a photograph. We never had to take photos from a vehicle that was running.

The company kept us supplied with drinking water for the duration of the trip and they supplied an electrical inverter that converted nrg from the truck battery into elec. for digital camera batteries. The vehicle also is equipped with a 2-way radio so that the guide can be in contact with park officials and other guides to find out where there are the most recent sightings of big cats and their kills. And this is where the guide's long experience really pays off. The experienced guide will have good and trust-worthy connections with his peers. There were no troubles with the vehicle. The tent (for camping portion of the trip) was spacious, air mattress comfortable& my sleeping bag was warm--as needed up on the crater. The young cook, Samani, was friendly and really good in the noisy, chaotic kitchens that he works in at the campsites. He kept us warmed up with thick soups to start dinner and provided a variety of goodies in his lunch boxes. In total, the companies grasp of logistics was superb. There were no problems on this trip.

This full trip report is posted on Fodor's site and on Trip Advisor.

Back in Arusha we met again with the Destination Tanzania co. rep. Since there had been absolutely no problems with the whole trip it was a pleasant meeting. We would have absolutely no reservation about recommending this company to anyone for a safari trip. They were extremely professional right from the initial email contact and then throughout the whole trip. The price seemed to come in the middle of the quotes we received and they seemed to catch on fastest to what we wanted in the way of a tailor made trip. It was worthwhile to pay, above the bottom quotes that we received, for their logistical expertise. As for the companies with higher quotes, well we all see the same animals and scenery. And we sure did not miss any animals with this guide.

Hope this helps some people make up their mind about a safari co.

Fantastic Kilimanjaro and Safari Operator

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful
In February 09, I completed a Kili trek and short Serengeti safari with Destination Tanzania Safaris. Their pre-trip support was sensational with Karen and Innocent (owners and founders) providing quick, informative and friendly feedback and support.

This pre-trip support was well and truly backed up on the trip itself. The guides were excellent showing great knowledge and a willingness to get to know us. This made the trek a more personal experience. The equipment, food and support crew were all of an excellent standard. Most importantly, the crew’s dedication to safety was excellent with the guides well trained and the best equipment on hand.

I found DETASA on the internet, looking for Western Breach ascents of Kili. I found two other companies offering comparable products (Killiwarriors and SCENE), but at a much higher price. We travelled side by side with one of these groups for most of our trip and the only noticeable difference was they got one extra acclimatisation day on the mountain, which none of our group felt like would be of benefit after the trip. Even without that extra day, DETASA boasts an enviable record of about 98-99% success rate on this route.

On safari, the guide was knowledgeable, friendly and highly experienced. We saw some amazing creatures in the wild and will fondly remember the trip. Also, the vehicle was well maintained and in great condition.

In summary, I would highly recommend DETASA. They offer the professionalism of a large company, but the “personalness” of a small company.

Awesome, Educational Safari & Guide

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful
In March 2008, I did a 7 day wildlife safari with detasa and it was awesome! They met us
at the airport with a big warm smile. I couldn't believe the knowledge of the guide. He
knows his stuff. It was incredible how far away Gabe could spot an animal. He did anything to make the experience spectacular. It's one thing to do your job but the value
added was a wonderful treat. We saw the big five and a leopard on the ground along with all the other animals, birds, and vegetation. The leopard is an elusive animal and to witness that was superb! I have traveled the world for 23 years and when it comes to Tanzania, I will always use detasa. I like down to earth, easy to talk to people and Gabe is
the man. Innocent, one of the owners, made sure that we were pampered and well cared
for. He can answer any question and put anyone right at ease. He also uses nothing but
the best hotels. When I'm away from home, I appreciate the comforts of home. I'm
thankful to have found detasa and will always recommend them to future perspective
travelers who want an awesome, spectacular, indulgent safari experience.
