The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) has successfully concluded a vital one-day road safety training for drivers of tourist vehicles in Arusha, held on 29 May 2025 in collaboration with the Tanzania Police Force – Traffic Division and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).
This capacity-building session, officially requested by the Head of the Traffic Division in Arusha (Ref: AD.590/1156/01/13), was conducted in direct response to rising demand for enhanced driver professionalism, road safety awareness, and regulatory compliance during Tanzania’s bustling tourism season.

Well-Attended and Impactful
The session attracted an impressive number of participants from various tour companies across the Arusha region. Drivers were taken through an intensive day of interactive presentations, practical sessions, and one-on-one consultations focused on:
- Tanzania’s updated road safety laws and traffic regulations.
- Professional conduct and safety protocols expected from tourism transport providers.
- Real case reviews and discussions on challenges encountered in previous high seasons.
- On-site services by TRA, including issuance and renewal of driving licenses, category upgrades, and replacements.
Many attendees expressed appreciation for the clarity of information, practical knowledge, and the opportunity to address real concerns with traffic authorities in person.
Government Collaboration and Support
The event was led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Zaunda I. Mohamed, Head of Traffic Safety in Arusha, who emphasized the importance of safety as a national priority, especially within the tourism value chain.
“Drivers are not only vehicle operators but frontline ambassadors of our country’s image. Ensuring they are well-informed and legally compliant enhances both safety and the quality of our tourism,” said SSP Mohamed.
TRA officials were also present to support driver licensing processes on-site, eliminating the need for drivers to make separate arrangements.

TATO’s Role in Enhancing Tourism Standards
This training is a clear demonstration of TATO’s commitment to the safety, sustainability, and service quality in Tanzania’s tourism industry. By taking a leading role in organizing and sponsoring the event, including providing the venue and logistical support, TATO continues to drive its mission of supporting members and elevating sector-wide standards.
TATO Chairperson commented:
“This training is part of a broader strategy to ensure that our members and their staff operate within the law, keep visitors safe, and maintain the integrity of Tanzania as a preferred travel destination. TATO remains committed to being a bridge between the private sector and public institutions for a stronger, more coordinated tourism industry.”
Positive Outcomes and Next Steps
Participants left the training better equipped, more confident, and legally updated. Many of them took advantage of the TRA’s on-site services, significantly reducing time and cost burdens.
Key recommendations going forward include:
- Conducting regular refresher trainings, especially ahead of the high season.
- Extending similar sessions to other tourism circuits beyond Arusha.
- Promoting continued collaboration between TATO, traffic authorities, and TRA for seamless service delivery.

Conclusion
The road safety training for tour drivers is a reflection of TATO’s hands-on approach to real-world industry needs. It also highlights the value of public-private partnerships in achieving shared national goals, such as safer roads, better services, and a thriving tourism economy.
TATO applauds all members who participated and encourages others to remain vigilant, proactive, and committed to upholding the highest standards in Tanzania’s tourism sector.
