The announcement, made on 20th January 2025, confirms the implementation of enhanced public health measures to contain the outbreak and prevent its spread locally and internationally.
The affected area, located in the North-Western part of Tanzania, is approximately 1,450 kilometers from Dar es Salaam and 1,068 kilometers from Arusha. The government, adhering to the International Health Regulations of 2005, has released Travel Advisory No. 15, which takes effect immediately.
Key Measures Outlined in the Advisory
- Mandatory Traveller’s Surveillance Form
All departing travelers from the Kagera region must complete an online Traveller’s Surveillance Form via https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz. - Monitoring of Contacts
Individuals in contact with confirmed cases are being monitored closely and are restricted from traveling until cleared by health authorities. - Temperature Checks at Points of Entry
All travelers entering or exiting Tanzania will undergo body temperature screening. Those presenting feverish conditions will be further evaluated by Port Health Authorities. - Health Information and Reporting
Travelers will receive health information at points of entry and be advised to self-monitor for symptoms of Marburg Viral Disease (MVD). A toll-free number, 199, is available for reporting any signs and symptoms. Suspected cases will be tested and treated at designated government health facilities. - Infection Prevention and Control Measures
Travelers and staff at entry points must adhere to measures such as hand hygiene, physical distancing, and symptom reporting. - Conveyance Operator Responsibilities
Transport operators are required to comply with exit screening protocols, maintain hygiene standards, provide hand sanitizers, and report any symptomatic travelers to port health authorities immediately.
Government Commitment and Review on Marburg Viral Disease
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Seif A. Shekalaghe, emphasized that the advisory will be reviewed as necessary to align with the evolving situation.
Safety of Tanzania’s Tourism Regions
The outbreak is localized to the Kagera region, far from Tanzania’s key tourism destinations, including the Northern and Southern circuits. Popular attractions such as Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Mount Kilimanjaro remain unaffected and safe for visitors.
The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) supports the government’s efforts and reassures tourists of the safety and preparedness measures in place. Travelers are encouraged to plan their visits confidently while adhering to the outlined guidelines.
