TATO and MNRT Successfully Conduct National Driver Guides and Porters Capacity Building Programme 2026 to Strengthen Professionalism, Safety, and Responsible Tourism
The Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT), successfully conducted the National Driver Guide Refresher Training Programme 2026 together with a large-scale Porters Capacity Building Initiative under the theme:
“Professionalism, Safety and Responsible Guiding in Tanzania’s Protected Areas.”
The large-scale national initiative brought together 2,428 registered driver guides from across Tanzania alongside more than 1,159 mountain porters from Arusha and Moshi in a series of structured training batches aimed at strengthening service quality, professionalism, safety standards, welfare awareness, and responsible tourism practices within Tanzania’s safari and mountain tourism industry.
The official opening ceremony was presided over by the Honorable Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, who was accompanied by several senior ministry officials and tourism stakeholders. Her presence underscored the government’s recognition of driver guides and porters as critical ambassadors of Tanzania’s tourism sector and custodians of visitor experience.

Building Professional Excellence in Tanzania’s Safari and Mountain Tourism Industry
Driver guides and mountain porters remain at the heart of Tanzania’s tourism experience. While driver guides are responsible for interpreting wildlife, landscapes, culture, and ensuring visitor safety during safaris, porters play a vital role in supporting mountain trekking expeditions, particularly on Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
Recognizing these vital responsibilities, the 2026 refresher and capacity-building programme was carefully designed to equip tourism frontline professionals with updated industry knowledge, practical skills, and international service standards needed to meet evolving global tourism expectations.
The training initiative reflects one of TATO’s core institutional objectives: capacity building for members and their staff to strengthen professionalism, service excellence, safety standards, and sustainable tourism practices across Tanzania’s tourism value chain.

His session highlighted how driver guides and tourism frontline personnel directly influence international perceptions of Tanzania through their professionalism, storytelling ability, communication skills, and interaction with visitors.
The presentation further stressed that every tourism professional serves as a brand ambassador for Tanzania, making professionalism, ethical conduct, and quality service delivery essential components in protecting and strengthening the country’s global tourism image.
Strengthening Safety and Responsible Tourism
As Tanzania continues to attract increasing numbers of international visitors, ensuring safety and professionalism within both the safari and mountain tourism sectors has become more important than ever.

These components are essential in preserving Tanzania’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading safari and mountain tourism destinations.
Nine Successful Training Batches Across the Northern Circuit
The 2026 programme was conducted in multiple phases, with a total of nine training batches successfully completed to accommodate the high number of registered guides and porters across the Northern Tourism Circuit.
The phased approach enabled broader participation while ensuring effective learning environments and hands-on engagement for all attendees. Hundreds of driver guides and more than 1,000 porters benefited from the programme, reinforcing sector-wide professionalism ahead of the upcoming tourism high season.
At the completion of the training, participants were awarded official certificates recognizing successful participation in the refresher and capacity-building programme — further strengthening professional credibility within the industry.
